The ingredients are very easy to gather and the process is so quick and simple, which we all need in our busy life. One of the main ingredients, Ovaltine is a milk flavoring product made with malt extract, sugar and whey with cocoa flavoring. Ovaltine is a healthy drink powder that provides many essential vitamins. During my childhood years in Liberia, I drank a hot cup of Ovaltine each morning with my siblings during our breakfast time before heading off to school. Regular consumption of Ovaltine is recommended by doctors since it contains significant amount of Zinc, magnesium and Calcium. It is highly nutritional and great for children of all ages. Ovaltine is totally caffeine free which makes it the perfect morning and bedtime drink, depending on your dietary requirements. Ovaltine can be purchased from your neighborhood grocery stores or any African/Middle Eastern store, especially for the brand type that is used in making this recipe.

Another ingredient is the Abuelita Authentic Mexican Chocolate Mix, which is made with cocoa, sugar and cinnamon. It is very unique, delicious and flavoring. I first used Abuelita Mexican Chocolate Mix in 2017 for my son 1st birthday party during the chilly days of January. The party theme was Winter Onederland and with my slow cooker I made a hot chocolate bar for guest to make their hot chocolate with various toppings such as, marshmallows, toffee bits, mini chocolate chips, crushed peppermints, candy canes, soft peppermint sticks, whoppers, whipped cream, dark chocolate syrup & caramel sauce. Since the party, I have added this Mexican chocolate mix to my pantry stable list!

Now let’s get our gallon of whole milk and make this delicious Ovaltine Mexican Hot Chocolate which give you that cozy, relaxing and comfortable feeling all in a mug with a taste! This recipe should take you less than ten minutes to prepare; combine Ovaltine and Mexican chocolate mix in a mug and stir in the hot milk; topped with whipped cream or marshmallows. Voila and all done 😊!

The Ovaltine Mexican Hot Chocolate drink can be paired with the following breakfast, snack and dessert options: Waffle, Pancakes, Hot Butter Biscuits, Doughnuts, Muffins, Cakes, Cookies, S’Mores and more. Also, excess hot chocolate should only remain out a maximum of 2 hours before being packed up and stored in the refrigerator. Once refrigerated, hot chocolate can be stored for up to 4 days. Yes, you can reheat a homemade hot chocolate, I recommend reheating it on the stovetop until it’s hot and steamy (but not boiling), instead of using the microwave where it’s harder to control the heat.
